It is so capable that I fell into the "Just one more feature" trap and subsequently fell into every hidden pitfall the documentation forgot to mention.

As a developer, I have seen too many "Demo-ware" AI tools. OpenClaw is different. It is the first Agent framework I am willing to run in production.

If a feature breaks, you can tell the Agent to audit its own code, find the bug, and fix it. And surprisingly, it doesn't get stuck in a loop. For a solo dev without a QA team, this is a lifesaver.

The 4 Traps That Will Kill Your Deployment

If OpenClaw were perfect, I wouldn't be writing this. Here are the 4 pitfalls I discovered the hard way.

Trap #1: The "Model Version" Clash

The Idea: Assign big tasks to a smart model (Gemini 3) and small tasks to a cheap model (Gemini 2.5) to save money.

The Reality: Total System Failure.

OpenClaw froze instantly. No error message. Just death.

The Cause: Gemini 3 and Gemini 2.5 use incompatible transmission formats on Vertex AI. It is like trying to plug a USB-C cable into a Lightning port.

Trap #3: Configuration is Fragile

The Stat: My service crashed 27 times.

  • 1 crash was a bug.
  • 26 crashes were because I touched the config.json file.

JSON is unforgiving. A missing comma or an extra space kills the service with a vague "Parse Error." Worse, changing one parameter (like Token Limit) can implicitly break another (like Heartbeat) due to hidden dependencies.
